Alan is a born and bred Boltonian, educated at Bolton Grammar School before graduating in Law from the University of Sheffield and completing his professional examinations at the College of Law in Guildford. He served his Articles of Clerkship at Russell & Russell and was admitted as Solicitor in 1975. Alan became a Partner of the firm in 1977 becoming joint Senior Partner in 1983.
In 2001, Alan was appointed Assistant Deputy Coroner and Deputy Coroner for Manchester West covering Bolton, Salford, Wigan and Leigh in 2003.
In recent years Alan has specialised in Licensing work and in the sports industry. He has acted in relation to the licensing of stadiums, including Bolton Wanderers' Reebok Stadium and Coventry City's Ricoh Arena. He has also acted on behalf of the Lawn Tennis Association in relation to the licensing of their headquarters, the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton and the Horseracing Betting Levy Board.
Alan acts across a wide range of legal matters on behalf of a number of Premiership footballers and football Managers.
Alan has been involved in many local community projects. He served on the original capital fund raising committee for the Bolton Hospice and assisted in the formation of Vision Aid, a registered charity to assist visually impaired children.
A former Chairman and Treasurer of the Bolton North-East Conservative Association Alan has been President of the Association since 2001. He is also a former Chairman of the Bolton-le-Moors Round Table and a former President of the Bolton Chamber of Commerce.
