Past
Legal Pioneers
In 1887 William Russell, the son of a local timber merchant, started his own legal practice in the town of Bolton. He quickly established a reputation for being fair and diligent and soon attracted large clients including Bolton Union Permanent Benefit Building Society, one of the pioneers of the Building Society movement.
William Russell was a public spirited individual who contributed a great deal to local affairs, culminating in his election as MP for Bolton in 1922 with a majority of 6000. He was also a generous supporter of local charities.
His union with his younger brother, Walter Russell, in 1898 created the name Russell & Russell that has been at the forefront of Bolton's legal community ever since.
